Conclusion

This chapter has demonstrated how a major United Kingdom government initiative, the ALSF has been used at a regional level to help develop a research and management framework for archaeological deposits within the Vale of York. The collation of both archaeological and geological datasets for the Vale within a GIS has allowed the identification of areas of high and low archaeological potential within a number of discrete terrain units. Within each unit, a number of research hypotheses and questions have been identified and these will be addressed during future stages of this project through programmes of field evaluation (i.e., trenching, test pitting, geophysical survey, etc). This information will be continually fed to the heritage community, and other stakeholders via the County Historic Environments Record, as well as to other interest groups via the project website, seminars, and publications.
